Verizon LG5200 GlucoPhone with built-in Blood Glucose Meter keeps a check on your Diabetes

Diabetes, though literally can be defined as a chronic health condition where the body is unable to produce insulin, but it is surely way beyond this definition. It is one disease, which if not controlled can not only give rise to several other ailments but can also be fatal if not kept in check. And how nice would it be if there would be a device that could be carried along anywhere and everywhere, just the way we carry along our iPods and mobile phones. Well there may just be an answer to this need.

New Jersey-based company HealthPia has introduced an innovative device called GlucoPack, a special glucose meter, which sends across glucose information over the web. HealthPia has made the GlucoPack available on Verizon LG5200 phone (CDMA platform) for the US market during the AADE Conference.

Apparently, the firm has “obtained FDA approval for its patent-pending technology that integrates a blood glucose meter with a standard-issue cellphone.”

The GlucoPack can be fitted onto the back of the mobile phone. All that the user, who wants to check his sugar level, needs to do is place the blood-sample into a tiny slot on the side of the phone for analysis.

Within just a couple of seconds, the GlucoPack brings up the result through ‘text’ to a database available on the internet along with the subscriber’s permission (you set the access rights).

What’s more, HealthPia is in the works of developing more models for renowned handsets such as Motorola Razr and the Apple iPhone.

According to DiabetesMine, the GlucoPhone technology, which is essentially the GlucoPack on a mobile phone, was first developed in Korea, and was imported to US by Dr. Stephen Kim in 2003.
